How do I get from Detroit to Elite Auto Lab?

Take I-75 north. North of M-102 (8 Mile Road), the freeway crosses out of Detroit and into Oakland County, and 8 Mile Road is exit 59. Keep going to exit 65, 14 Mile Road, which sits on the Madison Heights–Troy city line; our shop is at 436 E 14 Mile Rd. On the way you pass the I-696 interchange (exit 61), 11 Mile Road (exit 62) and 12 Mile Road (exit 63).

Through Detroit, I-75 is the Fisher Freeway or the Walter P. Chrysler Freeway, named for pioneers in the auto industry. I-75 runs along the west side of Madison Heights and I-696 along its southern border, so one interstate takes you most of the way. Use a map app for current ramps and the final turns.

What is a ceramic coating, and what does it do?

A ceramic coating is a liquid protective layer that bonds to clean, prepared paint and gives it a glossy, water-repelling surface. Water beads and runs off, dirt rinses away more easily, and the paint is better protected from chemicals and UV, but a coating does not stop physical damage such as rock chips.

Detailers also protect paint with waxes and silicon dioxide (SiO₂) sealants. A coating is the longer-lasting option, and it keeps a showroom shine far longer than wax or sealant, which is why it is especially valuable on new cars and on dark colors that show imperfections easily.

Why do Detroit drivers add a ceramic coating?

Detroit's weather is hard on paint at both ends of the year. The city has a hot-summer humid continental climate, with a 1991–2020 July mean daily high of 83.7°F and a January mean daily low of 19.2°F. A coating helps the paint resist UV in summer and makes the winter road film rinse off more easily.

Winter adds salt. Detroit was among the earliest cities to salt its roads, around 1940, and road salt speeds up rust on cars. A coating helps protect the paint from road chemicals, and it works alongside regular washing, not instead of it.

A vehicle that parks outside all day is exposed to UV and road chemicals all day, so that is where a coating's resistance matters most.

How long does a ceramic coating last?

Our coatings last 2 to 9 years, depending on the product you choose, and how long yours lasts also depends on how the vehicle is cared for. A coating reduces washing effort and protects against environmental damage for as long as it is maintained.

What happens when I bring my car in for a ceramic coating?

We inspect the paint, wash and decontaminate it, polish out swirls and scratches if it needs correction, apply the coating, and let it cure. A coating locks in whatever is underneath, so the prep is not skipped.

  1. Assessment. We look over the paint and talk through your goals, which decides whether you need a maintenance detail, correction or a full restoration first.
  2. Wash and decontamination. A hand wash, foam cannon treatment and clay bar remove bonded contaminants such as brake dust, tar and industrial fallout.
  3. Paint correction, if needed. Multi-stage compounding and polishing removes swirls, scratches, water spots and oxidation.
  4. Coating. The coating goes on the prepared paint and cures. Plan to skip washing for 7 days afterward.
  5. Final inspection. We walk around the vehicle under show lighting and address any remaining spots before delivery.

Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

Paint correction is recommended first if the paint has swirls, haze, oxidation or other defects, because the coating seals in the finish, defects included. Many vehicles benefit but not all require it, and we assess your paint and advise when you come in. Downtown Detroit is roughly 12 miles from our shop, so for a paint correction and coating that takes several days, we will plan the drop-off and pickup dates with you.

Should I get a ceramic coating, paint protection film or both?

They do different jobs. A coating adds gloss and makes washing easier but does not stop physical damage, while paint protection film is a physical layer that absorbs rock chips, and many customers add both. A coating can go over the film for extra gloss and water-beading.

How do I care for a ceramic-coated vehicle?

Skip washing for 7 days after the coating, then wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoid harsh chemicals and automatic car washes. Coating booster sprays every 3 to 4 months help maintain performance, and an annual maintenance detail extends the coating's life.

Leather and interior surfaces are not covered by a paint coating, so they still need conditioning every 3 to 6 months. Our auto detailing page for Detroit covers interior and exterior care.
