What Is Paint Correction, and Does Your Car Need It?

Paint correction is polishing that removes swirls, light scratches, water spots and oxidation from your paint to bring the gloss back. This guide explains how it works, what it can and can't fix, how long it takes, when to do it before a ceramic coating and how to keep new swirls from coming back.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is polishing that removes swirls, light scratches, water spots and oxidation from a vehicle's paint to restore its gloss. At Elite Auto Lab, dual-action and rotary polishers do the work through multi-stage compounding and polishing.

Wikipedia describes polishing as a process aimed at paint correction: abrasives and polishing machines reduce or remove oxidation, micro-scratches and other imperfections, leaving a more uniform, glossy surface that's ready for protection.

What can paint correction fix, and what can't it?

It can remove swirl marks, light scratches, water spots and oxidation. Deep scratches that go through to the primer or metal need a body shop, though we can tell you what's possible.

  • Swirl marks: fine scratches in the paint, caused mainly by wiping a dusty car with a dry towel and by other improper washing and drying, according to NAPA Know How.
  • Light scratches: marks that haven't cut deep into the paint.
  • Water spots: mineral marks left by dried water.
  • Oxidation: dull, faded paint that has lost its original gloss.
  • Not fixable by polishing: deep scratches that reach the primer or metal, which need a body shop.

How does paint correction work?

We inspect the paint, polish out the defects in stages, and then protect the result. Polishers remove swirls, scratches, water spots and oxidation, and a sealant, spray wax or ceramic coating locks in the correction and protects the paint.

  1. Assessment and consultation: We inspect the paint and interior and talk through your goals, which decides whether you need a maintenance detail, correction or a full restoration.
  2. Paint correction, if applicable: Polishers remove swirls, scratches, water spots and oxidation.
  3. Protection application: Depending on your package, we apply paint sealant, spray wax or ceramic coating.
  4. Glass, wheels and trim: Windows are polished streak-free, wheels and tires are cleaned and dressed, and exterior trim is restored or protected.

Paint is a layered system topped by a clear coat, which gives the gloss and is the outermost layer. Correction works on that outer layer, and polishing works by abrasion, which is why we inspect first and only correct as far as your paint needs.

How long does paint correction take?

A maintenance detail takes about 4 hours, and a full correction with a ceramic coating can take 3 days or more.

The time depends on your vehicle's size, the condition of the paint, how many stages it needs and whether a coating follows.

Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

Often, yes. A coating locks in whatever is underneath, so swirls and scratches should be polished out first. Many vehicles benefit from correction, but not all need it, and we tell you which yours is at the assessment.

Proper correction also removes contamination, marring and oxidation that would otherwise prevent a coating from curing correctly. Our guides to ceramic coating vs PPF and how long a professional ceramic coating lasts cover the next step.

Is paint correction the same as detailing or waxing?

No. Detailing is the whole cleaning and restoring job, paint correction is the polishing step that fixes the paint, and wax, sealant or ceramic coating protects it afterward.

ServiceWhat it doesA good fit if
Maintenance detailA thorough wash that keeps the vehicle in conditionThe vehicle is already in good shape and you want to keep it that way
Full detailCleans and protects paint, interior, glass, wheels and trimYou want the whole vehicle reset, for example after winter or before a sale
Paint correctionPolishes out swirls, scratches, water spots and oxidationThe paint looks dull or marked and you want the gloss back
Ceramic coatingAdds a long-lasting protective layer that makes the paint easier to washYou want lasting protection, especially on a new car or dark paint

How do I keep swirl marks from coming back?

Wash gently and protect the paint. Correction removes the marks that are there, and new ones come from how the car is washed and dried, so hand washing and a protective layer are what keep the finish.

  • Hand wash with pH-neutral car shampoo and skip harsh chemicals and automatic car washes with harsh brushes.
  • Never rub a cloth across a dry, dusty car, and avoid rough or dirty towels; NAPA Know How names both as common causes of swirls.
  • Avoid waterless washing on a heavily soiled car; Wikipedia notes it raises the risk of micro-scratches, and a rinseless wash is safer on a moderately dirty one.
  • If you add a ceramic coating, avoid washing for 7 days after it goes on, then use a ceramic booster spray every 3 to 4 months to maintain performance.
  • Get a full detail 2 to 4 times a year for a daily driver, with maintenance washes in between.

How often should you detail your car?

We recommend a full detail 2 to 4 times a year for a daily driver, with maintenance washes in between. Vehicles with a ceramic coating need less frequent intervention.

Michigan winters are hard on paint, since road salt speeds up rust on cars, so a detail after winter resets the vehicle for spring.

How much does paint correction cost?

It depends on your vehicle's size, the paint's condition, how many stages the correction needs and whether a coating follows. The quickest way to an exact number is a free quote with your year, make and model.

We assess your vehicle at the start and tell you which level makes sense, so you only pay for what it needs.
