How Long Does Window Tint Take, and How Long Does It Last?
Window tint usually takes 2 to 4 hours to install at Elite Auto Lab, the film keeps curing for 3 to 7 days after you leave, and good film lasts for years. This guide covers how long each stage takes, when you can roll your windows down, how long tint lasts by film type and what makes it fail early.
By Elite Auto Lab. Install times and care steps are from our own window tint page. Lifespan figures by film type come from Tint World's July 2026 guide, so they describe typical film and are not our warranty terms.
How long does window tint take to install?
Most vehicles take 2 to 4 hours at Elite Auto Lab. The number of windows, curved rear windows and small quarter panels, whether old tint has to come off and our shop schedule can all change that.
A tint job runs in a set order: we clean each window inside and out, cut every pattern on a computer plotter, apply the film, finish the edges and inspect every window before the car leaves. Our window tint page walks through each step.
- More windows. A full vehicle takes longer than a few windows.
- Curved glass and small panels. Curved rear windows and small quarter panels take more care to fit.
- Old tint removal. Old, bubbling or purple tint has to come off before new film goes on.
- Shop schedule. Ask when we can fit your vehicle in when you book.
Does removing old window tint add time?
Yes, it can. Old, bubbling or purple tint has to come off before new film goes on, so a vehicle with old tint takes longer than one with bare glass, and we quote removal as a separate line item.
Customers come to us several times a week to fix tint from other shops that has bubbled, turned purple or started peeling. Tell us what is on your windows now when you ask for a quote, and we'll plan for it.
How long does window tint take to cure?
The film keeps curing for 3 to 7 days after installation. During that time small water pockets may appear and disappear on their own, and that is normal.
We inspect every window for clarity and adhesion before the car leaves, so a bubble or hazy patch that is still there after the curing window is worth a call to us rather than more waiting.
How long should I wait to roll down windows after tint?
Wait 5 days before rolling the windows down, because the film is still setting. Leave the film alone for 30 days before washing it, and keep the care rules below for the first month.
- Don't roll the windows down for 5 days.
- Don't wash the film for 30 days.
- Clean it with mild soap and a soft, clean cloth or synthetic sponge. Skip abrasive tools and ammonia-based cleaners, which Tint World lists among the things that shorten film life.
- Small water pockets while the film cures (3 to 7 days) are normal and disappear on their own.
Keep your warranty card and proof of purchase, and contact us first if you ever need to make a claim.
How long does window tint last?
Quality tint lasts for years, and the film type matters most. Tint World's July 2026 guide says many dyed films last 3 to 5 years, many carbon films 7 to 10 years or more, and ceramic film 10 years or longer when professionally installed and properly maintained.
| Film type | Typical lifespan (Tint World, July 2026) | At Elite Auto Lab |
|---|---|---|
| Dyed | 3 to 5 years, and sun can fade or discolor it | We don't install it |
| Carbon | 7 to 10 years or more under normal conditions | We install it |
| Ceramic | 10 years or longer, professionally installed and properly maintained | We install it; it's our premium film |
Those figures are one shop's view of typical film, not a promise. In our experience cheap tint fails after six months, which is why we install only carbon and ceramic film.
Our carbon and ceramic film is backed by the manufacturer's lifetime limited warranty, which runs for as long as the original customer owns the vehicle. It covers peeling, cracking, adhesive failure, delamination and purple color change, and the conditions are on our window tint page.
What makes window tint fail early?
Low-quality film, poor installation, heat and UV, hard daily use and the wrong cleaners shorten tint's life. Tint World lists the same causes, and they show up as bubbling, fading, discoloring and peeling.
- Low-quality film. Cheaper films are more likely to fade, bubble, discolor or peel.
- Poor installation. Poor installation leads to bubbles and lifting edges. We clean each window inside and out and inspect every one before the car leaves.
- Heat and sun. Intense UV and temperature extremes wear film down. Detroit's 1991–2020 July mean daily high is 83.7°F and its January mean daily low is 19.2°F, so Michigan film sees both ends.
- Daily driving. A daily driver is exposed to more wear than a garaged or occasionally driven vehicle.
- Harsh cleaning. Ammonia-based cleaners and abrasive tools shorten film life.
How do I make window tint last longer?
Follow the care steps for the first month, clean the film with mild soap and a soft cloth, and avoid ammonia cleaners and abrasive tools. Parking in shade or a garage when you can also helps.
- First 5 days: don't roll the windows down.
- First 30 days: don't wash the film.
- After that: use mild soap and a soft, clean cloth or synthetic sponge.
- Skip: ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads and rough handling.
- Park smart: shade or a garage cuts daily sun exposure.
- Keep paperwork: hold on to your warranty card and proof of purchase.
How do I know if my tint is failing?
Bubbles that stay after the curing period, purple or faded color and peeling edges are the signs. Small water pockets in the first 3 to 7 days are normal and clear up on their own.
If your tint has any of those signs and it came from another shop, we can remove it and put new film on. Old film has to come off first, and we quote removal as a separate line item.
