Starlight Headliner Cost in Michigan: What You'll Actually Pay
Starlight headliner cost in Michigan depends mostly on the number of stars and the size of your vehicle. At Elite Auto Lab a starlight headliner usually runs about $600 to $2,000+ installed, and this guide covers what changes that number, what a DIY kit costs, how long the job takes, whether ambient lighting adds to it and how to compare quotes.
By Ronnie, owner of Elite Auto Lab. Our price range and timelines are our own, confirmed in October 2026. Outside figures come from a California shop's 2026 guide and a 2022 guide from a starlight company, so they reflect other regions and dates.
How much does a starlight headliner cost?
A starlight headliner at Elite Auto Lab usually runs about $600 to $2,000+ installed, depending on your vehicle and the number of stars. Elsewhere the range varies: a California shop's 2026 guide puts professional installs at $900 to $3,500+, so compare what each quote includes before you compare totals.
The number of stars does most of the pricing, then the size of the headliner and vehicle, any custom pattern, ambient lighting if you add it, and the wiring and controller. Those factors are covered below. Our starlight headliner page shows the finished look and how the install works.
What changes the price of a starlight headliner?
The number of stars sets most of the price, followed by the size of the headliner and vehicle, any custom pattern, ambient lighting and the wiring and controller. Both outside guides we read agree on the first one: one calls star density the single biggest factor in labor time, and the other calls star quantity the main determinant of cost.
- Number of stars. More stars take more hours to place. A 2022 guide from a starlight company pairs roughly 300 stars with about $900 and 1,000 stars with $2,500 and up, which shows how quickly the total climbs.
- Vehicle and headliner size. A bigger roof takes more stars to fill. The California guide steps its prices up from compact coupes to full-size trucks and large SUVs.
- Sunroof or panoramic roof. Glass roofs take extra planning, and the California guide adds $150 to $300+ for them. Tell us if your vehicle has one.
- Custom pattern or constellation. A layout drawn for you takes more time than a standard spread of stars.
- Ambient lighting. Adding it changes the quote, and it's priced by the areas of the cabin you want lit.
- Wiring and controller. The light source has to be wired in and controlled, and that setup is part of the job and part of the price.
The outside figures above come from another region and a different company, so treat them as context. Our own range for Madison Heights is the one in the first section, and a quote for your vehicle gives the exact number.
How many stars does a starlight headliner have?
A starlight headliner has anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand or more stars, and our own work uses hundreds to thousands of fiber-optic lights. The right number depends on the size of your roof and how full you want the sky to look.
The outside guides give a feel for the spread: the California guide describes builds from 300 to 600 stars on compact coupes up to 1,400 and more on luxury and custom builds, and the 2022 starlight company guide pairs 300 stars with a small two-door coupe and 800 with an SUV.
A lower count gives a subtle look and a higher one a fuller night sky. Tell us which you want and we'll lay it out for your vehicle, including a custom pattern or constellation if you'd like one.
Is a DIY starlight headliner kit cheaper?
A kit costs less in cash, about $200 to $600 for the hardware according to the California guide, but you supply the labor and take the risk to your headliner. That guide puts a DIY build at 15 to 35 hours of bench work, and the 2022 starlight company guide warns that a mistake can damage the original headliner, which is expensive to replace.
The headliner has to come out of the vehicle before any stars go in, and it has to go back in with its trim, grab handles and overhead controls working. Our starlight headliner page walks through the steps a professional install covers.
How long does a starlight headliner take?
A starlight headliner takes 2 to 3 days at Elite Auto Lab, and ambient lighting alone takes 1 to 3 days. The California guide gives 2 to 4 business days for a standard install, so plan for a few days rather than an afternoon.
Time is where much of the price comes from, because each fiber is placed one at a time. If you want ambient lighting in the same visit, ask for the two to be quoted together.
Does ambient lighting cost extra with a starlight headliner?
Yes, adding ambient lighting changes the quote, because it's priced by the areas of the cabin you want lit. We can quote it together with a starlight headliner, and we don't publish a flat price for it.
Ambient lighting goes in places like the door panels, footwells, dash and center console, and you control the color by remote or app. Tell us which areas you want when you ask for a quote. The starlight headliner page explains how the two work together.
Are starlight headliners worth the money?
A starlight headliner is a cosmetic upgrade, so it's worth it if the look is something you'll enjoy every time you drive at night. It doesn't change how your vehicle performs, which is why the best value comes from choosing the effect you want rather than the biggest star count.
- Decide on the look first. A subtle layout and a full night sky are different quotes.
- See finished work. Our starlight headliner page shows an RGBW starlight headliner in a 2026 Cadillac Escalade, a 2026 GMC Sierra 2500HD and a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado.
- Ask for a quote on your vehicle. The only way to know what your roof costs is a quote with your year, make and model.
How do you compare starlight headliner quotes?
Compare quotes on the same lines: the number of stars, your vehicle and any sunroof, the light source and controls, ambient lighting, the timeline, and finished work you can see. Two quotes for the same vehicle can differ simply because one has fewer stars or leaves out something the other includes.
- Star count. Ask for the number of stars in writing and how they'll be laid out.
- Vehicle and roof. Make sure the quote names your year, make and model and any sunroof or panoramic roof.
- Light source and controls. Ask what the light source is and how you change color and brightness. Every starlight headliner in the photos on our lighting page is RGBW, which combines red, green, blue and a dedicated white diode to produce millions of colors, and you change the color from the controls.
- Ambient lighting. Ask whether it's included and which areas of the cabin it covers.
- Timeline. A starlight headliner takes 2 to 3 days with us. Ask any shop how long it will have your vehicle.
- Finished work. Ask to see photos of vehicles the shop has done, as we show on our starlight headliner page.
